Can’t quite figure out how to get started?  Fear not, we’re here to help! Regardless of the occasion, whether Halloween, Mardi Gras, or a Medieval Renaissance party, wearing Fancy Dress Costumes can be so much fun, (except for the time I wrapped myself in yards of roller gauze as the Mummy, which made going to the bathroom extremely difficult – not recommended!)  but unless you have something specific in mind choosing an outfit to wear can be daunting.Dressing Up Costumes Dressing Up Costumes/Tinker bellRegardless of who you are in your everyday life, you can transform yourself into anyone with just a little imagination and effort. Are you dressing up for yourself?  Or maybe that guy or gal you met at work/school that you’re hoping to bump into at the party?  If that’s the case, how about Robin Hood rescuing your maiden? Or a lost Alice in Wonderland needing help in finding her way?  Great ways to be noticed and get the conversation started.

On the other hand if you want to create a stir, how about keeping them laughing and  showing up with a big smile on your face as the unforgettable & misunderstood Joker from Dark Night – Batman.  Dressed in purple, gray and green, or making an entrance as the sexy tantalizing Dark Heart Queen in a red, black and white halter mini dress complete with ruffled collar and  heart card emblems!  Your choices are endless. Keep in mind you want to wear an outfit that you’re comfortable in as you are going to be in it for the whole night.Robin Hood

Start by figuring your budget.  If you don’t have a lot of money to spend you’ll have to come up with ideas based on what you already have at home in your wardrobe and then accessorize.  For instance , purchasing the Joker’s mask and gloves, and using your own clothing can be just as effective.  Unless your going for absolute authenticity, put a little of you into the costume your wearing people will remember you for it.  When you’re dressing up in costumes, don’t forget props as they add to the whole effect.

Mad Hatter

Now let’s take a look at these favorite costume themes for some more inspiration.  Beauty and the Beast, Iron Man, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood, Prince of Persia, Twilight, the WolfmanToy Story, A-team, SAW, the Green Hornet or the Chronicles of Narnia to name just a few.   Now what little girl, or grown woman for that matter, hasn’t dreamt of being Snow White, Cinderella, Princess Mulan or Princess Tiana for a day?  Use them as impetus to create your own unique Princess.

If you dress up as a character from a film, a famous star or legend, or a figure from a fairy tale like the Mad Hatter, try to choose the most notable article of clothing that the character wore.  For Michael Jackson, he had many, but probably the glove stands out most in your mind.  For Madonna it was her cone shaped bras.  Jack Nicholson and Arnold Schwarzenegger it was sun glasses. Lucy  Ricardo (Lucille Ball) had the red hair and lipstick. Lara Croft, Indiana Jones, Zorro,  Jack Sparrow, and Elvis all had their own particular look and memorable outfit.  If you can’t spring for the whole costume, dress yourself In the single most significant garment worn by that star or character and accessorize.  Some actors create a character from “the outside in” in other words it’s the clothes they put on that helps them become the character.  Wigs, masks and makeup can go a long way!

PrincessLook to the news and television, how about one of the cast members of the Jersey Shore -  the Situation, or Octomom, or maybe Tony Soprano?  There’s Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah, Kat from LA Ink, or one of the nerds from the Big Bang Theory!

Up till now we’ve been talking about individual costumes.  How about couples?  I bet  you can think of few, Barbie and Ken, Ricky and Lucy Ricardo, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Fred and Wilma Flintstone,  Beauty and the Beast, Bonnie and Clyde, Robin Hood and Maid Marion, Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood, Ketchup and Mustard,  Astronaut and Genie, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, Matador and Flamenco Dancer, Gangster and Flapper and finally Vampire and Vampiress.  As you can see the list goes on and on.  You are only limited by our imagination.Dressing Up Costumes
